a Uganda refugee and a hero
Today a guess speaker named Walter came to Peace, Love, and Harmony today. He is a refugee from Uganda. His country turned on him because he did not believe in violence. The rebels did not like the governor that he was working for. He did not like the fact that there where rebels against his boss. On the way home, his neighbor told him that the police was looking to arrest him. He felt betrayed and sad. This is what most children feel also. They are called Invisible Children. The invisible children is an organization that people give kids drugs to fight because they are so desperate. The speaker has been in many places with things that they need but we have. "The kids watch TV and then they fall asleep on the couch and we carry them to their room, but we have to travel everywhere just to find a place to sleep." said Walter. He made an organization where they take other refugees and they give them meaning in their lives. He is a hero yet he was one of the refugees. He is an inspiration to everybody. Uganda is located in the north-eastern part of Africa. Personally, I felt like we aren't doing enough for Uganda. Some of our main focuses are the Iraq and Iran incidents. There are still more incidents than Iraq. We have a lot of things that we have and we keep wanting more. Other people in the world barely have enough food to eat. I think people should donate more and more to the people who could barely fulfill their needs. People are fleeing their own country just to survive everyday more and more people die and get wounded and everything like that. That brings me back to the Father Joe thing. I went to the landfill on the first field trip while the other half of the class went to St. Vincent de Paul. St. vincent de paul is a place where homeless people live. Walter and his organization can't get every single refugee. I really hope that St. Vincent's has refugees because Walter is only one man. The St. Vincent's organization is the only thing that I would turn to if I was a refugee.

Mean and mad to clean and glad
We went to Gompers Charter school. A few years ago, it was one of the worst schools and had the lowest test scores then a few years later in 2005, it became a charter school. A while ago, it was Gompers secondary school. The children that went there were literally caged up like animals. They had many gangs and it was all covered in wood and it was a scary school. Most everyday the norm for the number of teachers was that there were always 18 vacant spots to teach. They had a different sub everyday because they never wanted to come back to that horrible school. Now their school is one of the best. They have found ways to keep the kids entertained and busy this school is the most improved school I know. The man behind this change is Vince Riveroll
First day
On the first day of intercession, we had someone named Caitlin came in and told us about non-profit organizations. A non-profit organization is a thing where they don't work for money. She told us about Father Joe. Father Joe is a man who came into San Diego with $50 in his pocket. He wanted to become a millionaire. The government saw his little business and they knew he wanted to help the community. They saw the trust in his eyes and they let him start a non-profit. He made a homeless shelter named St. Vincent de paul. It is a homeless shelter for people it is a big help to people on the street. He has saved many lives.
Landfill
One day we went to the landfill with Mr. Davis. A landfill is where all of the trash that we use goes. Garbage trucks that come to your neighborhood all come to a landfill. There are 3 of them in San Diego. There are 15 feet of garbage at the landfill. Anything you could possibly imagine is in the landfill. We also went to a small greenhouse. That is where plants grow. They are having trouble with the landfill and the greenhouses. That one common problem are seagulls. They are birds that fly really high (the height of most jets). The birds don't have really good vision. They collide into the jet and crash into the landfill and the greenhouse. That is why they have a solution. Seagulls are protected by the state. They have to drive away the birds in a non-lethal manner. They use extra loud firecrackers. That drives the seagulls away. If that doesn't work, they get a permit from the government and they are allowed to kill a seagull.

Diaper Drive
Today, we went to Ralph's to do a diaper drive. We had to ask average day people if they could go inside and buy some diapers or maybe some food. We thought it would be easy but it really wasn't that easy. Some of the people just completely ignored us. Let me talk about WHY we did that. There is this generous man named father Joe. He provides homes for people that have been abused in anyway. There are women and 1550 homeless children in San Diego alone. We did the drive because we had to give the babies some diapers and essentials. This is why we did the drive in the first place. We were spread out a lot. We where at four defferent stores. Ralph's, Target and two Von's.

WAP (Wild animal park)
Today we went to the Wild Animal Park. We got to see all of the animals, but that isn't why we came. The forrest fires recently burnt the WAP. It badly damaged most of their plants. Some of the most imporant plants are Acacia. Most the animals eat it. We got to plant some more plants for the animals. There are two categories of plants. Native and Exotic. Native plants are the plants that are orginaly grown in that county. Exotic plants are plants that are adopted from other counties
